SUMMARY:Using the NDTA Contemporary Practice Model to Facilitate Functional Shifts in Children with Significant Physical Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Course Description\n\n\n\n\nThe task of integrating aspects of postural control\, alignment\, and respiration in the completion of functional activities can be a challenge for all therapy disciplines working with individuals with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders. This introductory level course is designed for physical and occupational therapists and speech and language pathologists and those assistants who currently work with or desire to work with children presenting with neurological challenges that have resulted in significant physical challenges. Learning about the NDTATMContemporary Practice Model and applying it through observation of assessment and treatment demonstrations with practice of treatment strategies in labs will more directly impact postural control and coordination\, alignment of body segments and support dynamic postural activity\, stability\, and control. Functional goals and shifts in function will be explored for children with significant physical challenges with emphasis on how they might help the caregiver help them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants\n\n\n\n\nPhysical and occupational therapists and speech and language pathologists who currently work with or desire to work with children presenting with neurological challenges that have resulted in significant physical challenges. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nObjectives\n\n\n\n\nAt the conclusion of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nExplain the Theoretical Basis for the NDTATM Contemporary Practice Model as it relates  to their clinical practice.\nIdentify the essential postural\, neuromuscular\, musculoskeletal\, and sensory/perceptual elements necessary to gain postural control for identified functional goals for a client.\nIdentify the missing elements for improving function in clients neuromuscular and sensorimotor challenges through observation of instructor demonstrations.\nRecognize the motor and sensory foundations for the use of the trunk\, head/neck\, legs\, arms and hands for transitions and support.\n\n\nDescribe & facilitate a minimum of ten treatment strategies on another adult or doll that may be utilized to increase rib cage mobility and expansion\, spinal and head/neck alignment\, abdominal activity\, shoulder & pelvic girdle stability\, and balance of flexor/extensor synergies to support the caregiver.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstructor\n\n\n\n\nJane Styer-Acevedo\, PT\, DPT\, C/NDT\, is a distinguished clinician specializing in the treatment of individuals across the lifespan who face neurological challenges. SUMMARY:Handling Intensive to Improve Core Stability Toward Functional Goals
DESCRIPTION:Course Description\n\n\n\n\nThis 3-day introductory to Intermediate level workshop will enhance critical thinking skills for Therapists who are currently treating children with a variety of neuro-developmental challenges. Participants will learn to critically assess children through observation and analysis and hypothesize the causative impairments to identify intervention strategies and treatment sequences to achieve a child-specific functional goal. Foundational information will be contrasted with the challenges demonstrated by children with developmental\, neuromuscular\, and/or sensory/perceptual difficulties. Emphasis will be placed on therapeutic strategies and interventions of the Contemporary NDT practice model using the International Classification of Function (ICF) in handling children to gain core stability for functional goals (ADLs\, play\, leisure\, walking\, speaking and eating\, etc) and improved participation (family and recreational pursuits at home\, at the playground\, in school with peer group\, etc). In movement labs\, participants will have the opportunity to facilitate one another through movement transitions and in this process learn handling techniques to facilitate functional skill acquisition. Movement/simulation labs will support experiential learning. A review of anatomy and kinesiology of the trunk and proximal limbs may be helpful before attending the class. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants\n\n\n\n\nPhysical and occupational therapists\, speech and language pathologists \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nObjectives\n\n\n\n\nAt the conclusion of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nExplain the Framework for the NDT Contemporary Practice Model and using the ICF as it relates  to assessing and treating children with neurological challenges.\nIdentify the current concepts of NDT to assessment and treatment planning for children with neuromuscular diagnoses.\nIdentify and list the typical and atypical posture and mobility components required for functional skill demonstration such as ADLs\, play\, leisure\, walking\, and communication.\nDiscuss treatment sequences for identified functional goals following observation of an instructor treatment demonstration.\nDescribe treatment strategies for an effective and efficient sequence towards a child’s functional goal.\nSummarize at least 12 treatment strategies required in movement transitions and functional skills appropriate for a variety of children and a variety of ages with neuromuscular challenges.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstructor\n\n\n\n\nJane Styer-Acevedo\, PT\, DPT\, C/NDT\, is a distinguished clinician specializing in the treatment of individuals across the lifespan who face neurological challenges.
